FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Village of Monroeville    May 15, 2024

The Village of Monroeville is pleased and honored to announce that it has been awarded a $64,100 grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Division of Surface Water. The award is from a new grant program started by Governor DeWine four years ago titled H2Ohio River Initiative Chloride Reduction, and was created to help communities improve road salt storage and distribution practices in a manner that would reduce salt pollution in Ohio’s waterways, making those communities stronger, safer, and healthier. OEPA Agency Director Anne M. Vogel worked in conjunction with Governor DeWine to provide funding with no strings attached to award approximately $1 million to local municipalities to prevent over application of salt on Ohio roads, and reduce the amount of salt runoff into Ohio’s waterways.

Monroeville’s grant application was one of 239 applications reviewed by the OEPA, and one of only 23 to receive funding. The grant funding will be used to construct a 3-bay salt storage building, including a concrete floor and building pad. This will eliminate storing road salt on the ground, covered only with a tarp. Burkholder’s Custom Construction, of Ashland, OH., will be the project’s contractor. The construction is scheduled to be completed in September.
